ON THE RECORD BRIEFING ON CHINA TRADE AGREEMENT, EMBARGOED UNTIL 2300 EDT THURSDAY

Commerce Sec. Wilbur Ross took the podium at 1715 to announce what he called a significant agreement between China and the United States to advance trade as a result of the meeting between POTUS and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He spent 12 minutes reading a three-page handout distributed at the briefing (and which sent along by pool via a WHCA pool note), with some added and clarifying remarks.

(WH press says that those who want pdf copies of the handout should email them.)

Ross then took questions regarding cooked poultry, LNG exports, beef exports (“There’s fundamentally no American beef going into China right now.”), what this new initiative might have to do with China’s help in dealing with North Korea (“This doesn’t have anything to do with North Korea.”), why doesn’t the agreement try to get China to buy more U.S. coal (“This agreement does not deal with coal at all,” owing to geographical issues in getting Appalachian goal to China), etc.
